Common use
Trimox is commonly prescribed for bacterial infections including otitis media (middle ear infection), streptococcal pharyngitis (strep throat), sinusitis, pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections, and urinary tract infections. It is also used in combination with other medications for Helicobacter pylori eradication in peptic ulcer disease and as prophylaxis against bacterial endocarditis in high-risk patients undergoing dental procedures.
Dosage and direction
Dosage varies based on infection severity, patient age, weight, and renal function. Typical adult dosage is 250-500 mg every 8 hours or 500-875 mg every 12 hours. For children, dosage is typically 20-90 mg/kg/day divided every 8-12 hours based on weight and infection severity. Take exactly as prescribed, with or without food (though taking with food may reduce gastrointestinal upset). Complete the entire course of treatment even if symptoms improve to prevent antibiotic resistance. Shake oral suspension well before measuring dose.
Precautions
Inform your healthcare provider of any history of kidney disease, mononucleosis, or allergic reactions to antibiotics. May cause false positive glucose tests in urine using Clinitestยฎ. Use with caution in patients with history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis. Birth control pills may be less effective while taking antibiotics; use alternative contraception methods. Regular monitoring of renal and hepatic function may be required during prolonged therapy.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, other penicillins, or any component of the formulation. History of amoxicillin-associated cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction. History of penicillin-associated hepatitis. Patients with previous hypersensitivity reactions to cephalosporins may cross-react (caution required). Not recommended for patients with viral infections, infectious mononucleosis, or during breastfeeding without medical consultation.
Possible side effect
Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, skin rash, and vaginal yeast infection. Less frequently, may cause headache, dizziness, tooth discoloration (with prolonged use), and reversible hepatitis. Serious but rare side effects include severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, blood disorders, seizures (with high doses in renal impairment), and interstitial nephritis. Contact your physician immediately if you experience severe diarrhea, rash, difficulty breathing, or unusual bleeding/bruising.
Drug interaction
Probenecid decreases renal tubular secretion of amoxicillin, increasing blood levels. Allopurinol may increase incidence of skin rash. May decrease efficacy of oral contraceptives. Concurrent use with bacteriostatic antibiotics (tetracyclines, macrolides) may reduce amoxicillin’s effectiveness. Warfarin effects may be enhanced, requiring increased monitoring. May reduce efficacy of live bacterial vaccines (typhoid vaccine); complete vaccinations before starting therapy when possible.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Maintaining consistent antibiotic levels is important for effectiveness, so try to take doses at evenly spaced intervals.
Overdose
Symptoms may include severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, electrolyte imbalance, and crystaluria. In severe cases, may cause renal impairment or seizures. Management is supportive; gastric lavage may be considered if ingestion was recent. Maintain hydration and electrolyte balance. Hemodialysis can remove amoxicillin from circulation and may be indicated in severe cases, particularly with renal impairment.
Storage
Store at room temperature (20-25ยฐC/68-77ยฐF) in original container. Keep tightly closed and protect from moisture and light. Oral suspension: Store reconstituted suspension in refrigerator (2-8ยฐC/36-46ยฐF) and discard after 14 days. Do not freeze. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after expiration date printed on packaging.

Reviews
“Trimox effectively cleared my daughter’s ear infection within three days. The suspension was easy to administer, and she experienced minimal side effects aside from mild diarrhea.” - Sarah K., Mother
“As a physician, I’ve prescribed amoxicillin for over twenty years. It remains a first-line treatment for many common bacterial infections due to its proven efficacy and generally favorable side effect profile.” - Dr. M. Evans, MD
“I developed a rash on the fifth day of treatment, but my doctor switched me to an alternative antibiotic. It’s important to monitor for any allergic reactions while taking this medication.” - James T., Patient
