Soolantra: Prescription-Strength Relief for Inflammatory Rosacea Lesions
Soolantra (ivermectin) Cream, 1% is a topical prescription medication specifically formulated for the treatment of inflammatory lesions of rosacea. Its mechanism of action is attributed to the anti-inflammatory and antiparasitic properties of ivermectin, targeting the underlying pathophysiology of the condition. This cream offers a targeted approach, reducing the papules and pustules associated with this chronic dermatological concern. Clinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy and favorable safety profile, making it a cornerstone in the dermatological management of moderate to severe rosacea.
Features
- Contains 1% ivermectin as the active pharmaceutical ingredient.
- Formulated in a light, non-comedogenic, oil-in-water emulsion base.
- Designed for once-daily topical application.
- Available in a 30-gram tube by prescription only.
- Exhibits both anti-inflammatory and antiparasitic activities.
Benefits
- Significantly reduces the inflammatory lesion count (papules and pustules) associated with rosacea.
- Demonstrated superior efficacy compared to vehicle in achieving Investigator’s Global Assessment (IGA) success.
- Targets Demodex folliculorum mites, which are implicated in the inflammatory pathway of rosacea.
- Provides a favorable safety and tolerability profile with a low incidence of cutaneous side effects.
- Offers a convenient once-daily dosing regimen, promoting patient adherence to therapy.
- Helps improve overall skin appearance and patient-reported quality of life.
Common use
Soolantra (ivermectin) Cream, 1% is indicated specifically for the topical treatment of inflammatory lesions of rosacea. It is not indicated for the treatment of the erythematotelangiectatic (flushing and redness) or phymatous components of the disease. It is intended for use in adult patients and should be applied to the entire affected area of the face (forehead, chin, nose, and each cheek), avoiding the eyes, lips, and mucous membranes.
Dosage and direction
Apply a pea-sized amount of Soolantra Cream once daily to each of the five areas of the face: forehead, chin, nose, and each cheek. Spread gently and evenly as a thin layer across the entire affected area. The cream should be used for the full prescribed length of time, even if symptoms appear to improve. Continuous use is often necessary for maintenance of results, as directed by a healthcare provider. Hands should be washed after application.
Precautions
Soolantra is for external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water. Do not use on areas of skin with open wounds or severe exudative conditions. Patients should be advised that transient worsening of their rosacea may occur at the start of therapy. As with any topical product, patients should discontinue use and consult their physician if evidence of hypersensitivity or severe skin irritation occurs. The safety and efficacy of Soolantra in pediatric patients under the age of 18 years have not been established.
Contraindications
Soolantra is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to ivermectin or to any of the other ingredients in the formulation.
Possible side effect
The most common adverse reactions (incidence ≤1%) are skin burning sensation and skin irritation. Other local skin reactions, such as pruritus (itching), dryness, and contact dermatitis, have been reported. These are typically mild to moderate in severity. Systemic absorption of ivermectin following topical administration is minimal; therefore, systemic adverse events are not expected.
Drug interaction
Formal drug interaction studies have not been conducted with topically applied Soolantra. Given the minimal systemic plasma concentrations of ivermectin following topical application (<1 ng/mL), interactions with systemically administered drugs are considered unlikely. However, the potential for interaction with other topically applied products exists. Concomitant use of other topical acne or rosacea preparations, especially those with a drying or abrasive effect (e.g., abrasive soaps, cleansers, astringents, and chemical peels), may increase the potential for cutaneous irritation. A dermatologist should be consulted before using any other topical product concurrently.
Missed dose
If a dose is missed, it should be applied as soon as remembered. However, if it is almost time for the next application, the missed dose should be skipped, and the regular dosing schedule resumed. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Overdose
Topical overdose of Soolantra is unlikely to lead to life-threatening effects due to low systemic absorption. Excessive topical application may lead to severe skin irritation. In case of accidental ingestion, supportive measures should be taken and the individual should be monitored. Gastrointestinal effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea could potentially occur following ingestion. Medical attention should be sought.
Storage
Store Soolantra Cream at room temperature, between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Excursions are permitted between 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F). Do not freeze. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Reviews
Clinical trials and post-marketing surveillance have established Soolantra as a well-tolerated and effective first-line treatment for the inflammatory lesions of rosacea. In pivotal studies, a significantly greater proportion of patients achieved IGA success (clear or almost clear skin) with Soolantra compared to vehicle cream. Patient satisfaction surveys often report improvements in skin texture, reduction in bumps, and an overall enhancement in quality of life. Many dermatologists regard it as a foundational therapy in a comprehensive rosacea management plan due to its dual mechanism of action and excellent safety profile.
