Common use

Ophthacare is indicated for the treatment of a variety of inflammatory and infectious ocular conditions. It is commonly prescribed for chronic conjunctivitis (both allergic and bacterial), blepharitis, dry eye disease associated with inflammation, and post-operative ocular surface management. It is also used as an adjunct therapy in cases of viral conjunctivitis to prevent secondary bacterial infections and reduce inflammation. Patients with recurrent styes or non-ulcerative keratitis may also benefit from its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

Dosage and direction

Instill 1–2 drops into the affected eye(s) two to four times daily, or as directed by a healthcare professional. Before use, wash hands thoroughly. Tilt the head backward, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pouch, and instill the drops without touching the dropper tip to any surface including the eye. Close the eye gently for 1–2 minutes and apply light pressure to the lacrimal sac (inner corner of the eye) to minimize systemic absorption. If using other topical ophthalmic medications, administer Ophthacare至少 5–10 minutes apart to avoid dilution or interaction.

Precautions

Do not use if the solution appears discolored or contains particulate matter. Contact lenses should be removed prior to instillation and may be reinserted after 15 minutes. Avoid contaminating the dropper tip to prevent microbial contamination. If symptoms worsen or do not improve after 72 hours of use, discontinue and consult an ophthalmologist. Use with caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the herbal constituents. Not recommended for use in children under 2 years of age without medical supervision.

Contraindications

Ophthacare is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation. It should not be used in cases of perforated corneal ulcer or full-thickness ocular injury. Avoid use in viral keratitis (e.g., herpes simplex) unless specifically advised by an ophthalmologist, as certain ingredients may potentially exacerbate the condition. Not for injection or oral use.

Possible side effect

While generally well-tolerated, some patients may experience transient mild stinging or burning upon instillation. Temporary blurring of vision may occur immediately after application. Rarely, allergic reactions such as periorbital edema, itching, or redness may develop. Discontinuation typically resolves these symptoms. If severe irritation, pain, or visual disturbance persists, seek immediate medical attention.

Drug interaction

No significant pharmacokinetic drug interactions have been reported. However, as with any ophthalmic preparation, physical incompatibility may occur if instilled simultaneously with other eye drops. Always allow a 5–10 minute interval between different ophthalmic medications. Theoretical potential exists for interactions with systemic anticoagulants due to mild antiplatelet activity of some herbal components, though clinical significance is low with topical use. Inform your physician if you are using any other prescription or non-prescription eye medications.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, instill it as soon as remembered. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

Topical overdose is unlikely due to the formulation and route of administration. Accidental oral ingestion may cause gastrointestinal upset. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical attention or contact a poison control center. Ocular overdose (excessive instillation) may lead to increased transient blurring or discomfort; rinse the eye gently with sterile saline or warm water if excessive irritation occurs.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15–30°C), protected from light and moisture. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Do not freeze. Discard the bottle 28 days after first opening to avoid risk of contamination. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
