Foracort Inhaler: Advanced Dual-Action Asthma & COPD Control
Foracort Inhaler is a prescription-based combination inhaler designed for the maintenance treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It contains two active ingredients: Budesonide, a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the airways, and Formoterol, a long-acting beta2-agonist that helps relax and open air passages. This synergistic formulation provides both anti-inflammatory and bronchodilatory effects, offering comprehensive management of obstructive airway diseases. It is intended for regular use to prevent symptoms and improve lung function, not for immediate relief of acute bronchospasm.
Features
- Combination of Budesonide (inhaled corticosteroid) and Formoterol (long-acting beta2-agonist)
- Available in multiple strength variants (e.g., 100/6 mcg, 200/6 mcg, 400/6 mcg per puff)
- Delivered via a pressurized metered-dose inhaler (pMDI)
- Designed for twice-daily maintenance therapy
- Built-in dose counter to track remaining medication
- Requires prescription and professional medical supervision
Benefits
- Reduces airway inflammation and prevents exacerbations
- Improves lung function and exercise tolerance
- Decreases reliance on rescue inhalers
- Enhances overall quality of life through better symptom control
- Helps prevent nighttime symptoms and early morning wheezing
- Long-term use may reduce frequency and severity of asthma attacks
Common use
Foracort Inhaler is commonly prescribed for the management of persistent asthma in patients who require both inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting bronchodilators. It is also indicated for maintenance treatment of COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema, where airflow obstruction is significant. It is not suitable for relief of acute bronchospasm; a separate fast-acting inhaler should be used for sudden symptoms.
Dosage and direction
The dosage must be individualized based on disease severity and patient response. Typical adult dosage for asthma is 1–2 inhalations twice daily. For COPD, the usual dose is 2 inhalations twice daily. Shake the inhaler well before each use. Exhale fully, place the mouthpiece between lips, and inhale deeply and steadily while pressing the canister. Hold breath for 10 seconds if possible. Rinse mouth with water after each use to reduce the risk of oral thrush. Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
Precautions
- Not for use during acute asthma attacks or status asthmaticus
- Patients should have a short-acting bronchodilator available for rescue use
- Caution advised in patients with cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, osteoporosis, or glaucoma
- Monitor for signs of systemic corticosteroid effects with long-term use
- Avoid exposure to infections such as chickenpox or measles; consult a physician if exposed
- Do not stop using Foracort abruptly without medical advice
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Budesonide, Formoterol, or any component of the formulation
- Primary treatment of status asthmaticus or other acute episodes where intensive measures are required
- Severe hypersensitivity to milk proteins (in some formulations)
Possible side effects
Common side effects may include:
- Headache
- Throat irritation or hoarseness
- Oral candidiasis (thrush)
- Tremor
- Palpitations
- Cough
Less common but serious side effects may include:
- Increased blood pressure
- Tachycardia
- Adrenal suppression
- Osteoporosis
- Glaucoma or cataracts with prolonged use
- Paradoxical bronchospasm (if this occurs, discontinue use and seek alternatives)
Drug interaction
- Concomitant use with other beta-adrenergic drugs may potentiate cardiovascular effects
- Ketoconazole, itraconazole, or other CYP3A4 inhibitors may increase Budesonide concentrations
- Diuretics or steroids may enhance hypokalemic effects
- MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants may potentiate the effect of Formoterol on the vascular system
- Beta-blockers may antagonize the effects of Formoterol and produce severe bronchospasm
Missed dose
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one. Resume the regular dosing schedule.
Overdose
Overdose may lead to excessive beta-adrenergic stimulation including tachycardia, arrhythmias, tremor, headache, and hypokalemia. Corticosteroid overdose may result in hypercorticism. Symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended. Cardiac monitoring is advised in cases of significant overdose.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15–30°C). Keep away from direct heat, sunlight, and moisture. Do not puncture or incinerate the canister, even when empty. Keep out of reach of children. The inhaler should be discarded after the labeled number of doses has been used or after the expiration date, whichever comes first.
