Bentyl (dicyclomine hydrochloride) is an antispasmodic medication specifically formulated to treat symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional gastrointestinal disorders. It works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the gut, thereby reducing painful spasms, cramping, and bloating. This prescription medication is a cornerstone in the symptomatic management of IBS, offering patients a targeted approach to regain control over disruptive digestive symptoms. Proper diagnosis and supervision by a healthcare provider are essential for its safe and effective use.
Features
- Active Ingredient: Dicyclomine hydrochloride
- Drug Class: Anticholinergic, antispasmodic
- Available Forms: Oral tablets and syrup
- Standard Strengths: 10 mg and 20 mg tablets; 10 mg/5 mL syrup
- Prescription Status: Requires a prescription in most jurisdictions
- Mechanism of Action: Acts as a muscarinic antagonist, inhibiting acetylcholine at postganglionic parasympathetic neuroeffector sites
Benefits
- Effectively reduces the frequency and intensity of abdominal cramping and pain associated with IBS.
- Decreases bowel spasms, which can help normalize bowel function and reduce urgency.
- Alleviates bloating and discomfort, contributing to improved daily comfort and quality of life.
- Provides symptomatic relief that allows for better dietary and activity management.
- Can be used as part of a comprehensive IBS management plan under medical supervision.
- Helps restore a sense of control over unpredictable gastrointestinal symptoms.
Common use
Bentyl is primarily indicated for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), particularly in patients who experience significant spasm-related symptoms such as abdominal pain, cramping, and bloating. It is used on an as-needed or scheduled basis to manage these symptoms. It may also be used off-label for other gastrointestinal conditions involving smooth muscle spasm, as determined by a healthcare provider. It is not intended for the treatment of organic gastrointestinal diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or peptic ulcer disease.
Dosage and direction
The dosage of Bentyl must be individualized based on the patient’s response and tolerance. For adults, the typical starting dose is 20 mg taken four times daily. After one week, if well tolerated, the dose may be increased to 40 mg four times daily. The syrup formulation is dosed as 10-20 mg (5-10 mL) four times daily. It is generally recommended to take Bentyl 30 minutes to 1 hour before meals and at bedtime. Do not crush or chew the tablets; swallow them whole with a full glass of water. Dosage adjustments are necessary for elderly patients or those with hepatic or renal impairment. Always follow the specific dosing instructions provided by the prescribing physician.
Precautions
Patients should use Bentyl with caution if they have or have had: glaucoma; urinary retention; obstructive uropathy; severe ulcerative colitis or toxic megacolon; reflux esophagitis; or myasthenia gravis. Use with caution in patients with autonomic neuropathy, hyperthyroidism, coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, or hypertension. Bentyl may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision; patients should avoid driving or operating machinery until they know how the medication affects them. It may decrease sweating, leading to heat prostration in hot weather. Alcohol may enhance the drowsiness effects of dicyclomine. Use in pregnant women only if clearly needed and after discussing potential risks with a physician.
Contraindications
Bentyl is contraindicated in patients with: known hypersensitivity to dicyclomine hydrochloride or any component of the formulation; obstructive uropathy (e.g., bladder neck obstruction due to prostatic hypertrophy); obstructive disease of the gastrointestinal tract (e.g., pyloroduodenal stenosis, paralytic ileus, intestinal atony); severe ulcerative colitis; toxic megacolon complicating ulcerative colitis; unstable cardiovascular status in acute hemorrhage; and myasthenia gravis.
Possible side effect
Common side effects may include: dry mouth; dizziness; drowsiness; blurred vision; nausea; nervousness; weakness; and headache. Less common but more serious side effects can include: confusion (especially in the elderly); agitation; hallucinations; difficulty urinating; palpitations; rash; eye pain; and signs of an allergic reaction (e.g., hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat). Report any severe or persistent side effects to a healthcare provider immediately.
Drug interaction
Bentyl may interact with: other anticholinergic drugs (increased side effects); amantadine; antihistamines; antipsychotics (e.g., phenothiazines); antiarrhythmics (e.g., quinidine); benzodiazepines; monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs); opioids; tricyclic antidepressants; and ketoconazole (may reduce absorption). Always inform your doctor of all medications, vitamins, and supplements you are taking.
Missed dose
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include: headache; nausea; vomiting; blurred vision; dilated pupils; hot, dry skin; dizziness; dryness of the mouth; difficulty swallowing; CNS stimulation (restlessness, confusion, hallucinations); and cardiovascular collapse or respiratory failure in severe cases. In case of suspected overdose, seek immediate medical attention or contact a poison control center.
Storage
Store at room temperature (20°C to 25°C or 68°F to 77°F), away from light, moisture, and heat. Keep the container tightly closed. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medications out of the reach of children and pets.

Reviews
“Bentyl has been a game-changer for managing my IBS cramps. It works quickly when I feel a spasm coming on.” – Patient A, 42 “As a gastroenterologist, I find Bentyl to be a reliable option for patients whose primary IBS symptom is pain from spasm. It is important to monitor for anticholinergic side effects, especially in older adults.” – Dr. B, MD “It helps with the bloating and pain, but the dry mouth is noticeable. A trade-off I’m willing to make for the relief.” – Patient C, 35 “Effective for symptomatic control in appropriate patients. Requires careful patient selection and education on potential side effects.” – Clinical Pharmacist D
