Mircette: Effective Low-Dose Estrogen and Progestin Oral Contraception
Mircette is a combination oral contraceptive pill prescribed for the prevention of pregnancy. It contains a blend of ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel, hormones that work synergistically to inhibit ovulation, alter cervical mucus, and change the endometrial lining. This formulation is designed for women seeking a reliable, low-estrogen option with a simplified dosing regimen. Healthcare providers often recommend Mircette for its balance of efficacy and tolerability profile, making it a suitable choice for many patients.
Features
- Active ingredients: Ethinyl estradiol 20 mcg and desogestrel 0.15 mg
- 21 active hormone tablets followed by 2 inert tablets and 5 very low-dose estrogen tablets
- Monophasic formulation, providing consistent hormone levels throughout the cycle
- Packaged in a 28-day blister pack for ease of use and adherence
- Manufactured under strict pharmaceutical quality control standards
Benefits
- Provides highly effective pregnancy prevention when taken as directed
- Offers a lower estrogen dose, which may reduce the risk of estrogen-related side effects
- May result in lighter, less painful menstrual periods
- Can improve acne in some users due to the anti-androgenic properties of desogestrel
- The unique 28-day regimen includes low-dose estrogen in the final days to potentially minimize hormone withdrawal symptoms
- May offer non-contraceptive benefits such as reduced risk of ovarian cysts and ectopic pregnancy
Common use
Mircette is primarily indicated for the prevention of pregnancy. It may also be prescribed off-label for the management of menstrual-related disorders, including dysmenorrhea and menorrhagia. Some practitioners may consider it for hormonal acne treatment in appropriate candidates. It is not indicated for use as emergency contraception.
Dosage and direction
Take one tablet daily by mouth at approximately the same time each day, following the directional arrows on the blister pack. Begin with the first active tablet (yellow) on the first Sunday after menstruation begins or on the first day of menstruation. Continue taking one tablet daily until the pack is finished, then immediately begin a new pack the next day. The two green inert tablets contain no hormones, followed by five blue tablets containing ethinyl estradiol 10 mcg.
Precautions
- Notify your healthcare provider before starting Mircette if you smoke, as cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular side effects
- Regular blood pressure monitoring is recommended during treatment
- May affect glucose tolerance; diabetic patients should be monitored closely
- Use with caution in patients with conditions that might be aggravated by fluid retention
- Reduced efficacy may occur with gastrointestinal disorders such as vomiting or diarrhea
- Does not protect against HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases
Contraindications
- Thrombophlebitis or thromboembolic disorders
- Past or present cerebrovascular or coronary artery disease
- Known or suspected carcinoma of the breast or estrogen-dependent neoplasia
- Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding
- Known or suspected pregnancy
- Liver tumors, benign or malignant, or active liver disease
- Hypersensitivity to any component of this product
Possible side effects
Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal symptoms, breakthrough bleeding, spotting, change in menstrual flow, amenorrhea, temporary infertility after discontinuation, edema, melasma, breast changes, weight changes, and cervical erosion. Serious side effects requiring immediate medical attention include thrombophlebitis, arterial thromboembolism, pulmonary embolism, myocardial infarction, cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral thrombosis, hypertension, gallbladder disease, and hepatic adenomas.
Drug interaction
Mircette may interact with various medications including but not limited to: anticonvulsants (phenytoin, barbiturates, carbamazepine), antibiotics (rifampin), antifungal agents (griseofulvin), HIV protease inhibitors, non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, and St. John’s Wort. These medications may decrease contraceptive effectiveness. Concurrent use with these agents may require additional contraceptive protection.
Missed dose
If one active tablet is missed (24-48 hours late), take it as soon as remembered and take the next tablet at the regular time. If two consecutive active tablets are missed in the first two weeks, take two tablets daily for two days, then resume regular schedule with additional contraception for seven days. If two consecutive active tablets are missed in the third week or three or more consecutive active tablets are missed, discard the current pack and start a new pack the same day with additional contraception for seven days.
Overdose
Serious ill effects have not been reported following acute ingestion of large doses of oral contraceptives. Overdosage may cause nausea, vomiting, and withdrawal bleeding. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive.
Storage
Store at room temperature (20-25°C or 68-77°F). Keep in the original container to protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Reviews
Clinical studies demonstrate Mircette’s efficacy with a Pearl Index of approximately 0.4-1.2 per 100 woman-years. Patient satisfaction surveys indicate high continuation rates, with many users reporting improved cycle control and minimal side effects. Healthcare providers note the formulation’s favorable balance between efficacy and tolerability, particularly appreciating the reduced estrogen content for appropriate patient populations.
