Eurax: Expert-Prescribed Relief for Intense Pruritus

Eurax (crotamiton) is a topical scabicidal and antipruritic agent, formulated for the targeted management of scabies infestations and the symptomatic relief of pruritic conditions. As a non-greasy, fast-acting lotion or cream, it offers a dual-action approach, combining parasitic eradication with direct anti-itch action. Its efficacy is rooted in a well-understood pharmacological profile, making it a trusted choice for dermatologists and general practitioners in managing these distressing cutaneous presentations. This monograph provides a comprehensive, evidence-based overview for healthcare professionals.

Features

  • Active Ingredient: Crotamiton 10% w/w
  • Formulations: Available as a non-greasy, hypoallergenic cream and lotion
  • Mechanism of Action: Exhibits scabicidal activity against Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis and possesses direct antipruritic properties
  • Vehicle: Formulated in a soothing, emollient base to minimize skin irritation and support skin barrier function
  • Presentation: Tubes of 30g and 60g; bottles of 100ml lotion

Benefits

  • Provides rapid and effective symptomatic relief from intense itching associated with scabies and other pruritic dermatoses.
  • Eradicates the scabies mite through direct acaricidal action, resolving the underlying parasitic infestation.
  • Formulated for patient compliance, with a favorable sensory profile (non-greasy, minimal residue) that encourages correct application.
  • Soothes irritated skin through its emollient base, reducing the urge to scratch and mitigating secondary excoriation.
  • Offers a established therapeutic option with a well-documented efficacy and safety profile for use in both adult and pediatric populations (excluding infants).

Common use

Eurax is primarily indicated for the treatment of scabies infestations. It is also effectively employed for the symptomatic relief of pruritus (itching) from various causes, including allergic reactions, urticaria, and other non-specific itchy skin conditions where a topical antipruritic is warranted. Diagnosis by a healthcare provider is essential to confirm scabies and rule out other pathologies.

Dosage and direction

For the treatment of scabies:

  1. Bathing: Take a warm bath or shower and dry thoroughly.
  2. Application: Apply a thin layer of Eurax cream or lotion over the entire body from the chin down, paying particular attention to areas between fingers and toes, wrists, axillae, buttocks, and genital areas. The cream should be massaged gently onto clean, dry skin until it is absorbed.
  3. Reapplication: A second application is recommended 24 hours after the first.
  4. Bathing: 48 hours after the second application, take a thorough bath to remove the medication and change into clean clothing and bed linens. For the relief of itching: Apply sparingly to the affected areas and massage gently 2-3 times daily, or as directed by a physician.

Precautions

  • For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and broken or severely inflamed skin.
  • If contact with eyes occurs, rinse immediately with copious amounts of water.
  • Discontinue use if irritation or sensitization occurs and consult a healthcare professional.
  • Do not apply to acutely weeping dermatoses.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Contraindications

Eurax is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to crotamiton or any of the excipients in the formulation. Its use on infants is not recommended.

Possible side effect

While generally well-tolerated, the following side effects may occur:

  • Common (β‰₯1/100 to <1/10): Localized skin reactions including mild burning, stinging, or irritation at the application site.
  • Uncommon (β‰₯1/1,000 to <1/100): Allergic contact dermatitis, rash, and urticaria.
  • Rare (<1/1,000): Systemic allergic reactions are extremely rare with topical application.

Drug interaction

No specific drug interactions with other topically applied medications have been formally established. However, as a general precaution, concurrent application of other topical medicinal products (e.g., corticosteroids, other antipruritics) on the same area of skin is not recommended unless advised by a physician, as it may alter the absorption profile of either product.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed for the treatment of scabies, apply it as soon as remembered and then continue with the recommended schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one. For pruritus relief, apply at the next intended time.

Overdose

Topical overdose is unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption. Excessive application could potentially lead to increased local skin reactions such as irritation. In the event of accidental ingestion, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of ingestion may include nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal irritation.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15Β°C - 25Β°C). Do not freeze. Keep the tube or bottle tightly closed. Protect from light and moisture. Do not use after the expiration date printed on the packaging.
