Common use
Atarax is commonly prescribed for the short-term management of anxiety disorders and as an adjunct in the treatment of anxiety associated with organic disease. Dosage and direction
Dosage must be individualized according to patient response and indication. For anxiety and tension in adults, the usual dose is 50–100 mg daily in divided doses. For pruritus, the typical adult dosage is 25 mg three or four times daily. Elderly patients may require lower initial doses due to increased sensitivity. The oral solution should be measured with a proper dosing device. Tablets should be swallowed whole with water and may be taken with or without food.
Precautions
Patients should be cautioned about engaging in activities requiring mental alertness such as operating machinery or driving, as Atarax may cause drowsiness. Alcohol and other CNS depressants should be avoided due to additive effects. Use with caution in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy, or bladder neck obstruction. Hepatic impairment may require dosage adjustment. Tolerance to sedative effects may develop with continued use.
Contraindications
Atarax is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to hydroxyzine, cetirizine, or any component of the formulation. Missed dose
If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered unless it is nearly time for the next scheduled dose. In that case, the missed dose should be skipped and the regular dosing schedule resumed. Patients should not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include extreme drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, and hypotension. In severe cases, QT prolongation, seizures, or cardiorespiratory arrest may occur. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic. Gastric lavage may be considered if presented early. There is no specific antidote for hydroxyzine overdose.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15–30°C or 59–86°F) in a tight, light-resistant container. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiration date printed on the packaging. The oral solution should be protected from light and excessive heat.
